Let me be the first to say that this is MAAAAHVELOUS!!!! What more can I say?! Your illustration reminds me of a an old book (1900ish) we have that Jeff's Dad used to read to him & his sister when they were little, called the WATERBABIES. I wish you could see it. I think you'd love it. But even more, I can't wait to meet Violet!! Kisses to you & she!
meny meny thanks. i would love to see that book. i'll have to look it up. kisses to you too.
i think i was a little influenced by "mickey in the night kitchen" by maurice syndak. we have the video, and naked mickey reminds me of milo.
btw, milo told me today as we were walking home from soccer, that violet told him to stop walking and ride in the stroller. the other day he said that violet makes him too tired to walk (i can sure identify with that).
she's not even out of the womb yet, and she's already bossing us around!
Funny! Sounds like Violet is quite the Miss Personality, already.
Yep- It does remind me of The Night Kitchen, too. It was weird- as I looked at it, it took me 5 minutes to pinpoint what it reminded me of; but I knew it reminded me of something. We have the NIght Kitchen coloring book (1/2 colored by Jeff when he was 7!) I love Sendak, & that book reminds me some of our house. (altho' not as crumbly!) Do you & kiddos like the Little Bear books, too? (older Sendak)
I have been here so many times and it always makes me smile to see how much fun you guys have. I have always appreciated your creativity in life. Very inspiring! I'll be visiting often. Funny thing is, until about two months ago, I didn't even know blogging existed. How country am I? I feel oh so hip now! Love, Barbie
i have always loved little bear, (though i always forget that it was done by sendak-seems so cute and proper as compared with "wild things". does he do the seven little monsters series on tv? i just realized it looks like his stuff.) my kids aren't familliar with the books, but we had the board game.
mickey in the night kitchen kind of reminds me of a brownstone, whick is basically what we live in.
actually i was planning to use the image for thank you cards, which i am more likely to send- i have yet to send out a birth announcement for any of my children!
hey steph, thanks for commenting on my blog. i wanted to answer your question here so you wouldn't miss it. i got into illustrating kind of by accident. i joined this website called ifreelance.com, on a whim (it's now wizbids.com and they charge for memberships now!) It was a pretty neat site, you could be virtually any freelance profession and post your profile and the type of work you do and the site will automatically "find" jobs that match your decription and you can bid on them. you can join as the provider of the job or the freelancer. when you bid, if the provider likes you, they will choose you and you "win" the job. i guess as a provider you can also search for freelancers, cause i was actually invited to bid by the provider for this particular job. she asked me to send her a sample drawing and she liked my work and we've been working together since.unfortunately the site changed to paid memberships soon after that and i didn't change my membership so haven't been able to use it since. i'm hoping now with this "experience" i won't need a site like that to get other job offers like this one.
wow! good for you! how interesting! i'll have to check that website out. thanks for telling us how you got into illustration, michelle.
recently ayun halliday, the east village inky writer signed my blog (see "why i never blog anymore") and recommended www.mamaphonic.com it's an online forum for women artists, mothers in particular. they accept submissions of writing, visual art, and offer a way for women in art to connect with one another. its a pretty neat site. i sent in the super violet illustration. we'll see if anything comes of it.
i'm reading the book "mamaphonic" right now, its short stories about how women artists juggle motherhood, career, & art. Ayun has a story in there as well. check it out!
